ILLuminatus: new works by Mark Matlock & dski one

I'm super stoked to be doing a show with my great friend, and a true inspiration to me, Mark Matlock. Mark is one of those guys that is so amazingly talented in so many genre's, there is just nothing he really cannot do. He's self-taught and has done canvas and illustrative work for over 15 years. He's been in countless gallery shows across the US, as well as numerous magazines with his illustrative work. We have a lot of the same influences in early hip hop and street art, and I love hearing his numerous stories from his time in NYC and Chicago. Like me, he really seems to enjoy working on a large scale, so our pieces compliment each other well. Personally, he pushes me to become a better artist and challenges me to go outside my comfort zone.  The show open on Friday, April 10th at 6pm at my home inside Lulubell Toy Bodega's gallery, and both Mark & I will be there hanging out. Stop by and check his amazing new works on handmade wood canvas'. Below are a sneak peek from both myself and Mark. I'll being doing prints of CREAM (shown below) as well as several other of my new canvas', and the originals will be up for grabs as well. It's all the Downtown Mesa Independent Music Fest that night - so it's a great night to come out!

Downtown Mesa's Brew Fest was such a blast! Thank you to all who came out, taking some great local brews, enjoyed the sounds of Unfortunate Youth, and played a little corn hole in the sunshine! The response to this event was incredible! I heard they expected 800 visitors, and they hit 2,000 in just four hours. Most of the beer vendors sold out! What a great event, thank you so much DMA for having me be a part of this. Can't wait for the next one. Some shots of the fun (and my corn hole games in action) below:

Downtown Mesa is having it's first of hopefully many BREWFEST on March 7th, from 2-6pm, and the wonderful people at DMA commissioned me to give 8 corn hole games some color love! Here's a few WIP shots. Come see the finished product and hang out, drink some local brews and enjoy 3 live bands with us! More info on Mesa Brewfest here.

It's fun doing shows all over the country, but sometimes, there's no place like home!  Spring has sprung in Mesa, AZ and the 100 degree weather is just around the corner (literally....this weekend!), so what better time to enjoy the cool spring evenings? The Mesa Urban Garden is in full bloom, and Friday 5/16, as part of the Downtown Mesa 3rd Friday series & Mesa Up @ Nite live music & art series, they are hosting the soothing sounds of the Joel Ortiz Quartet, and little ol' me will be the featured artist! I'm working on a few new pieces for the show, and I'll be bringing a bunch of really uniquely framed prints! Lots of one of a kind, vintage frames for your grab & go pleasure!

Also, right next door at the delectable Republica Empanada, check out local screen print artist, John Arvizu!  If you haven't eaten at Republica yet - you are missing out!  Both sweet and savory empanadas, veg & vegan options, yucca fries & a killer Margarita. Be sur ego check them out Friday, you'll be hooked!

MUG (Mesa Urban Garden) is located at 212 East 1st Avenue in Downtown Mesa, with Republica right next door.  They’re just down the street from the Mesa Arts Center at 1st Avenue & Hibbert. Hope to see you Friday night!

Go Forever!

Been in the mood to get back to canvas & work on something free form (not a commission).  Don't get me wrong, I love commissions, but I put a lot of heart & soul into them for each person, and the process of trying to get it just like you think your buyer wants can be internally stressful sometimes. So it was fun to get back to some freeform ideas and just paint and see where it takes me. Here's what came out, and if you dig it, it's available here.  It's 3' wide x 4' tall, aerosol & acrylic on canvas.

I'm always honored when a fellow artist commissions me to do something for them. The talented Nebulon5  had me capture his cat, Dirty, on canvas. Long fur is always a fun challenge for me, and I'm pretty stoked on how it turned out. This one is about 24" x 20", acrylic & aerosol on canvas. Thanks Mike for this cool opportunity!

I'm honored to be a part of the Don't Tread On Me group show, presented by Pangeaseed & Cometdebris.  Don't Tread On Me is a group custom show, with proceeds benefitting PangeaSeed's ongoing efforts towards ocean conservation.  This show brings light to the atrocities of Shark Finning, utilizing Cometdebris' Sametan figure as the platform. Thirty eight artists from around the world are customizing Sametan's, which will be available for viewing & sale at Spoke Gallery in San Francisco.

For my piece, I'm pulling in my love for Wes Anderson, and one of my favorite movies, The Life Aquatic!  My Sametan is a Steve Zissou jaguar shark, shown below! I'm also currently working on a painting to go on the bag this guy will come in!  Check it out! (I'd like to thank my lovely lady, @LuluAmy to most of you, for the lil hand made beanie for this guy, and our son Nakai, for the generous donation of Lego handgun. :)
